FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Paying the full ChIMES registration fee (online, prior to the start of a session) guarantees your spot for all classes in that session. No prorated fees for classes missed.
When registering, please ensure your selected class day/time works with your schedule. While we understand that family schedules can change, we regularly have full classes with waitlists, and therefore it is typically difficult for us to accommodate requests to switch to different classes/rollovers to future sessions.
Please see the refund policy information below and contact us with any questions at chimes@keynote-music.org.
For 8-week sessions, the fee is $230 for one child and parent/caregiver. Additional sibling rate is $140.
For 4-week sessions, the fee is $115 for one child and parent/caregiver. Additional sibling rate is $70.
Instrument kits can be added on to an order for $12 (or two kits for $20). These contain the instruments most frequently used during class (rhythm sticks, egg shaker, scarf, bells).
Refund Policy
San Diego Youth Symphony's ChIMES and Music Discovery programs are carefully planned based on enrollment, staffing, and resource allocation. For this reason, refunds are not issued once a program has begun, except in the rare event of program cancellation or administrative error on our part.
Family Hardship & Extreme Circumstances
We recognize that families may experience significant hardships (such as illness, injury, relocation, or other personal circumstances). While these situations are deeply sympathetic, they do not qualify for a refund once the program period has started.
Instead, in the spirit of compassion and support, we may offer a partial credit toward a future enrollment. Credit amounts and eligibility will be determined by staff leadership on a case-by-case basis, depending on timing and participation. Any outstanding credits or rollovers must be used within one year of the date they were awarded.
Registration opening dates for new sessions will be posted on this page, as well as on our registration site. Once a session is open for enrollment, if a class hits maximum enrollment, you may then join the waitlist. If a spot opens up in your desired class, someone from the ChIMES team will get in touch with you. No payment is required until you are notified of an open spot and choose to enroll.
One make-up class is permitted per session. This is on a space-available basis and must be scheduled in advance by emailing chimes@keynote-music.org. Any make-up classes must be redeemed during the same session and cannot be rolled over to a future session.
We offer a discounted rate for additional siblings, and younger siblings that are less than 8 months old may attend for free.
The English/Spanish bilingual class is geared towards children of all ages (birth up to age 5). The babies/toddlers class is recommended for children up to about age 2.5, the toddlers class is geared towards children aged approximately 18 months up to age 3, while the preschooler class is aimed at children ages 3-5. There are also both indoor and outdoor class options to choose from - Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday classes are held in our new Early Childhood Music Studio in Liberty Station, while Thursday classes are held outdoors on the grounds of Marston House in Balboa Park.
For all classes, you'll want to bring your ChIMES instrument kit (available for purchase at the time of registration), which contains the items used most frequently during class. Or, feel free to bring your own instruments from home, as long as you have something to shake (such as a maraca or rattle), something to click together (like rhythm sticks or claves), and something flowy (such as a scarf or ribbon streamer). We encourage you to bring your songbook to class each week as well.
For outdoor classes, please bring a blanket to sit on, as well as hats, sunscreen, jackets, and water.
YOU are your child's most important role model, so the best thing you can do in class is to actively participate in class activities and have fun with your child. While you may be unsure of yourself as a singer and music maker, children learn by modeling and observing their loved ones, so just have fun with the songs and activities, and your child will too! Continuing the music-making at home in between classes (by singing the songs from class, dancing, playing instruments, and listening to the playlists) is also beneficial. Repetition is essential for early learning and development - neural connections grow stronger with each repeated experience, whether it be a song or new skill.
Friday and Saturday classes are held indoors in our ChIMES Early Childhood Music Studio in Liberty Station, located at 2820 Roosevelt Rd., on the second floor in Room 202.
Wednesday classes will meet in the northwest corner of Ingram Plaza, on the grassy area across from the Command Center. Shade is available under the trees but we still recommend sun protection, water, and a blanket should you choose to sit or play in the sun.
Thursday classes are held outdoors on the grounds of the beautiful, historic Marston House in Balboa Park, located at 3525 7th Ave., San Diego. Special thanks to the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) for hosting ChIMES classes at the Marston House!
Classes will take place unless there is substantial rain, the ground is too wet, or the heat is too extreme. (Please note that we can’t always predict exactly what the weather will be like and conditions can sometimes change quickly, so please come to class prepared with blankets, rain jackets, hats, sunscreen, water, as required.) If we are unable to meet outside, we will plan to meet at an indoor location nearby. In the event an indoor space is not available, we will add an extra class date to the session as a makeup. Families will be notified of the plan via email/text as soon as possible before the start of class.
