WHY MUSIC DISCOVERY
A solid music foundation sets the stage for a lifetime of
musical enjoyment, learning and participation.
Music Discovery is a unique two-year program, specifically designed for children ages 5-7 to develop a solid foundation of musical skills, and support and enhance school readiness. This program plays a pivotal role in your child’s musical journey within the KeyNote/SDYS family, leveraging prior musical experiences (like participating in ChIMES) to ready them for future engagement in a youth orchestra or band ensemble.
At Music Discovery, your child will enjoy:
A Play-Centered, Developmentally Appropriate Approach to Music Education
The Music Discovery curriculum is based on a number of early childhood music methodologies including Kodaly, Dalcroze and Orff Schulwerk, as well as Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Sequence. For more information on our curricula approaches, click here: A Who's Who and What's What
In Music Discovery, students learn through active participation, exploration, improvisation, and composition. The lessons and activities are scaffolded to be developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and applicable to varied learning styles. Playfulness and creativity are a key element for learning. Students in Music Discovery learn singing, rhythm and instrumental skills through songs, stories, imaginative play, movement, dance, and creative improvisation.
Exposure to a Wide Array of Music and Instruments
Music Discovery students learn how to sing a variety of songs that incorporate different keys, time signatures, rhythm patterns, and styles. They learn how to identify specific elements in a musical piece, and are exposed to a multitude of musical genres from around the globe. Students gain rhythmic skills by playing unpitched percussion instruments including hand drums, shakers, rhythm sticks, and tone blocks. The introduction of Orff xylophones and glockenspiels allows children the opportunity to begin exploring the concept of playing pitched instruments, and learning how to play and sing together as a group.
In the second year of Music Discovery, students are introduced to the families of instruments in the orchestra, and receive hands-on instruction as they learn how to hold, care for, and play string instruments (including the violin and cello), and wind and brass instruments (introductory Nuvo instruments including the toot, dood, and J-horn).

Musical and Early Learning Skills Development
The Music Discovery program is specifically designed to help your child develop key musical, social, and developmental skills, all of which will help them succeed in school, social settings, as well as future musical ensemble participation.
Students in this program regularly work together as a group; they sing, move, create and play instruments together, and learn how to take turns, support one another, and contribute to group success. They will no doubt develop some long-lasting friendships as well!
Students also have ample opportunities to learn skills on their own, as a soloist, or in small groups, helping develop their confidence and individual strengths.
