OPUS RESOURCES

Partnering with San Diego schools to expand access
to free, equity-focused instrumental music programs

STORIES

The Opus Project started in 2010, reinstating music education, after an absence of 15 years, in the Chula Vista Elementary School District — California’s largest K-6 school sector. Opus has worked in partnership with CVESD to create parental advocates for youth music education and to provide a high-quality, curriculum-based program. The Opus Project is a catalyst, instigating systemic change through community music arts.

This video celebrates the beginning of this journey, where it all started — 15 years ago. Happy 15th anniversary, Opus!

RESOURCES

Music Education Advocacy

Looking for music education for your child in Chula Vista?
Want to be an advocate for access to music education in your community?
Here are a few great resources to get you started…

Chula Vista Elementary School District

If your child’s school doesn’t offer music instruction, tell your district that you want it.

  • Contact the superintendent and members of the school board: cvesd.org/contact-us
  • Attend your local school board meeting and let them know in person. The CVESD Board typically meets on a Wednesday once a month at the Dr. Lowell Billings Board Room at the Education Service and Support Center: 84 East J Street, Chula Vista. See meeting schedule and links to agendas here: cvesd.org/board-of-education/board-meetings

Cultural Arts Commission

The Chula Vista Cultural Arts commission makes recommendations to the City Council and the City Manager on cultural arts issues affecting the citizens of Chula Vista. The commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month, 6:00PM, at the Civic Center Branch Library: 365 F Street, Chula Vista.

Music Schools and Programs

Here are a few local organizations that offer and promote music education for young people.

  • Chula Vista Academy of Music and Dance, chulavistaacademyofmusic.com
  • Chula Vista School for the Creative and Performing Arts, cvscpa.org
  • Classics 4 Kids, classics4kids.org
  • San Diego Music Foundation, sandiegomusicfoundation.org
